One
thing that I have grown to value more and more from my teaching
experience is students' humanity. While our society of
standardization pushes hard to conform, each student brings to the
classroom a wide variety of individual values, ideas, talents,
experiences, and needs that require acknowledgement. Students' lives are infinitely precious and as a future teacher it is extremely
important to me that I do not lose the value of their time. In this
way, a sensitive balance must be found and re-calibrated until
students' individual needs are being engaged in a way that
cooperatively works with those of the rest class.
Despite student circumstance or future, writing is an essential part of functioning in society. Students need to be able to effectively advocate for themselves and this requires the ability to use both Standard Academic English and their personal voice. Alongside this, I value giving students the opportunity to experiment with creating through the use of a variety of mediums, styles, and genres. Creativity is often fueled by passion. This allows students to discover and evaluate forms of expression they feel they excel with and can utilize most effectively to spread their ideas.
Through the reading of both fiction and non-fiction texts students can learn about essentially anything they desire to know more about. As the saying goes, "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime." While studying the plot of a novel has its benefits, the teaching of critical and active reading strategies allows for a unified classroom learning experience while also allowing individual interests to be further developed.
This balance is certainly not easy to find and maintain, but after reflecting upon the amount of time, and life, we require from students it is something I will work endlessly to improve on and ultimately achieve.
