Revitalizing the Canon

As standardization does not frequently give teachers complete freedom with which texts they teach, these resources, that I have composed, allow students to find their own paths into canonical literature.

Multimodally Engaging With Catcher in the Rye
Looks at ways in which a variety of students' Funds of Knowledge can be used to engage and close read The Catcher in the Rye. Includes research, rationale, lesson ideas, and Common Core connections.

Tattooing the Classics
Compiles a number of literary tattoos found online sorted by novel. These work to show students that texts they often dismiss as boring or pointless are important enough that someone chose to permanently interpret them on their body. Also include ideas for both a lesson and unit level activity.

Shakespeare in the Classroom
Includes both a Romeo and Juliet unit overview with three fleshed out lesson plans as well as teaching points for several other Shakespeare texts. Each of the teaching points provides writing prompts and fun resources for students.

Woolf and Conrad in the Classroom
A short example of hook activities to begin units on these lesser taught classical authors.
